Brahms - String Sextet No.2 - Alban Berg Quartet, Amadeus Ensemble

"(...) A fortieth anniversary concert by this unique ensemble [Amadeus Quartett], scheduled for the 23rd October 1987 in the Salle Favart of the Ópera-Comique in Paris, was taken over at short notice after the death of Peter Schidlof [member of the Amadeus Quartet] by the Alban Berg Quartett, who had been close friends of the Amadeus for ten years and for whom the Amadeus was the 'symbol of the string quartet'. Soon, however, a spontaneous desire among the two groups of players to make music together resulted in a change of programme. (...) after the interval, the three surviving members of the Amadeus Quartet joined three members of the Alban Berg Quartett (...) to perform the second of Brahms's two string sextets (in G, op.36). This is the performance recorded here (...)" [Robin Golding in the booklet]
